Some specific requirements for laser protective glasses in the United States

2023-08-15

The relevant requirements for laser protective glasses in the United States are mainly reflected in the standards jointly developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Laser Research Association (LIA).   Among them, ANSI Z136.1 Laser Safety Standard and ANSI Z87.1 Personal Protective Equipment: Eye and Face Protection are the two main standards.

1. Wavelength range: Laser protective glasses should be able to filter out specific wavelengths of laser radiation to ensure that they can effectively block the damage of laser radiation.

2. Optical density: The optical density of laser protective glasses should meet the requirements of the standard to ensure that it can absorb or reflect most of the laser radiation, so as to avoid damage to the human eye.

3. Field of view: Laser protective glasses should have an appropriate field of view to ensure that the user can see the operating area, so as to maintain safety.

4. Robustness and wear resistance: Laser protective glasses should have sufficient robustness and wear resistance to ensure that they can withstand long-term use and repeated cleaning.

5. Mark: Laser protective glasses should mark relevant information on the lens, including wavelength range, optical density, etc.

6. Certification: Laser protective glasses shall meet the requirements of ANSI Z136.1 and ANSI Z87.1 standards.

It should be noted that the laser radiation of different wavelengths and powers has different degrees of damage to the human eye, so when choosing laser protective glasses, it is necessary to choose the corresponding product according to the actual laser radiation situation and protection requirements.   At the same time, when using laser protective glasses, it is also necessary to comply with the corresponding operating procedures and safety requirements to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
